Skincare in Your 30s: The Only 5 Products You Actually Need
Stop hoarding 12-step routines. Here's the evidence-based short list that does 95% of the work for your skin in your fourth decade.
Your 30s are when collagen production starts dipping by about 1% a year, fine lines begin around the eyes, and pigmentation that you 'got away with' in your 20s starts showing up. The good news: you don't need a 12-step routine. You need five products, used consistently.
1. A gentle cleanser
Syndet-based, fragrance-free, pH 5.5. Used twice daily. Skip foaming cleansers that strip the barrier — at this age, dryness shows immediately as fine lines.
2. A vitamin C serum (morning)
10–15% L-ascorbic acid. It neutralises free radicals from pollution and UV, brightens pigmentation, and boosts collagen synthesis. Apply on damp skin before moisturiser.
3. A retinoid (night)
The single most evidence-backed anti-ageing ingredient. Start with 0.025% tretinoin or 0.3% retinol, twice a week, gradually building to nightly. Sandwich with moisturiser if you're sensitive.
4. A barrier-supporting moisturiser
Look for ceramides, niacinamide and panthenol. Skip heavy occlusives unless you have very dry skin. A pea-sized amount morning and night is enough.
5. Sunscreen — the non-negotiable
Broad-spectrum SPF 50, reapplied every 3 hours when outdoors. UV is responsible for 80% of visible facial ageing. Skip this and the other four products are wasted.
What you don't need
Snail mucin, 12-step Korean routines, pricey 'eye creams' (your moisturiser works around the eyes), or anything labelled 'anti-pollution mist'. Spend on the five above and you'll outpace anyone with a 20-product shelf.
