Is Laser Hair Removal Safe? A Clear-Eyed Answer

We hear the same five worries in every laser consult. Let's address each one with science — and show you what truly happens during a session.

Laser hair removal has been around for over 25 years and is one of the most studied aesthetic procedures in dermatology. Yet five worries keep coming up in every consult. Here are the answers.

1. Will it cause cancer?

No. Lasers used for hair removal emit non-ionising light in the visible to near-infrared range. This light has no DNA-altering capacity. Decades of long-term studies confirm zero increased cancer risk.

2. Will it darken my skin?

With the right device (diode 808nm or Nd:YAG 1064nm) calibrated for Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin, no. The wrong device or wrong settings — yes, you can get post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Always verify your clinic uses devices certified for Indian skin tones.

3. Does it hurt?

Modern diode lasers with chilled sapphire tips feel like a warm rubber-band flick. Most patients describe it as 4/10 discomfort at most. Topical numbing is rarely needed.

4. Will the hair grow back thicker?

Biologically impossible. Treated follicles produce thinner, lighter hair until they're permanently disabled. The myth comes from confusing temporary shedding with regrowth.

5. How permanent is it?

After 6–8 sessions, expect 80–90% permanent reduction. Hormonal areas (chin, jawline) may need annual touch-ups. Body hair on legs, underarms and arms typically stays cleared for years.

What actually happens in a session: clean skin, shave the area, apply ultrasound gel, fire pulses across the zone, finish with cooling gel. A full lower leg takes about 25 minutes.
